A collaboration between Sonia Sabri (Kathak) and Ash Mukherjee (Bharatanatyam) featuring live music performed by Sarvar Sabri, Shoma Dey & Dan Nicholls toured as part of SSCo's tenth year celebrations 'Kaavish'.
The piece was initially inspired by Woody Allen’s brilliant ‘Death Knocks’, a one-act play he wrote in 1968 and featured two characters; the dance languages work in dialogue and are based on opposites: dark and light, negative and positive. Highly energetic and a great display of world class dramatic kathak and barathanatyam styles, this collaboration leaves you mesmerized and full of emotion. In addition to the duet, the piece also treats you to two solo pieces from each dance artist.
Salaam A modern classical celebration of Persian and Indian artistry expressed through the intricate language of Kathak dance. ‘Salaam’ (peace) is a composition that intimately beautifully crafts dance with live music. Sonia explores the classical roots of Kathak in this two-part solo programme. Focussing on precise footwork, rapid turns, complex rhythms and poignant mime and gesture, this creation is a striking display of both the skilled and dramatic aspects of Kathak.
Although the compositions derive from the traditional idiom, Sonia’s personal approach creates a novel and modern presentation of the classical. This stunning solo production features evocative live music from an ensemble of musicians on the sitar, the harmonium and through the use of vocalisations. The musical creations are also involve the influential contributions of the world renowned maestro Sarvar Sabri on tabla, performing rare and novel compositions in Indian classical music.
